CME Information - Overview

Testing for polymorphisms in the VKORC gene and the CYP2C9 gene has recently been endorsed by the FDA as an appropriate medical practice to optimize the dose of Coumadin. The physiologic bases for this test are reviewed, as well as the proper interpretation of the genetic data in the clinical setting.

Educational Objectives
The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to-

  • Cite why genotyping for VKORC and CYP2C9 may be useful for patients who are being started on Coumadin therapy.
  • Describe the physiological mechanism underlying the genetic associations.
  • List the strengths and limitations of the VKORC/CYP2C9 genotyping assay.
  • Review the results of the VKORC test reports and be able to utilize the test in clinical practice.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes cardiologists, internists, and others involved with patients who need Coumadin for anticoagulation.

Method of Instruction / Participation
This online enduring material comprises slide sets with text and audio derived from a live cardiology grand rounds presentation with post activity assessment and evaluation.
