CME Information - Overview

Over the past 60 years, advances in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital heart disease have greatly improved patients’ postoperative survival. These advances have resulted in a burgeoning population of patients now living with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). In the United States, their number is nearing 1 million, and increasing rapidly.

Patients with ACHD present with special clinical needs. Adult cardiologists may be unfamiliar with the altered cardiac anatomy and physiology of a patient who underwent repair of a complex congenital defect, whereas pediatric cardiologists may be unfamiliar with the finer points in diagnosis and management of adult diseases, such as coronary artery disease and diabetes, which are often superimposed upon existing congenital heart disease. Consequently, the smooth transfer of patients with congenital heart disease from pediatric to adult care is often difficult to accomplish.

This symposium reviews problems and issues related to the more common forms of ACHD, including natural history, methods of diagnosis and treatment outcomes, functional results of congenital heart surgery, and the management of arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.

Educational Objectives
The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to—

Discuss the types of congenital heart defects seen in adults and understand how the management of these patients has changed in recent years.
Explain the substrates and treatment of potentially life-threatening arrhythmias in adults who have undergone palliative surgical therapy for complex congenital heart disease.
Describe the surgical management strategies for previously palliated adult patients.
Recognize some of the specific challenges involved in the care of adults with congenital heart disease including complicated anatomy, common complications seen in postoperative patients, and issues relating to pregnancy and contraception.
Recognize outcomes measures used in interventional catheterization procedures for ACHD, and apply this knowledge to improve functional ability and life survival for these patients.
Compare treatment outcomes for ACHD patients with congestive heart failure including systemic right ventricular dysfunction.
Discuss the incidence and clinical symptoms of coronary anomalies in ACHD patients.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes adult and pediatric cardiologists who care for adult patients with congenital heart disease, nurse practitioners, and clinical researchers with an interest in congenital heart disease.
