Question:

My resting heart rate is about 97 beats per minute. Am I at risk for future problems?

I am a 49-year-old male, 6 foot 1 inch tall, about 185lbs. I have an abnormally fast resting heart rate of about 97-beats per minute. My father also had this same fast rate. Am I at risk for future problems?

Answer:

by Texas Heart Institute cardiologist, Mehdi Razavi, MD

Mehdi Razavi, MDDepends on how often your heart rate is elevated and what the average heart rate is. I would advise wearing an outpatient monitor and to get a better assessment. Often an elevated heart rate is secondary. By that I mean it is a consequence of other factors such as dehydration, lack of exercise, elevated thyroid function, elevated adrenaline, and other causes. These must be evaluated and, if abnormal, treated. Good luck.
