Ask a Texas Heart Institute Doctor
Informed patients make better patients.
Question:
What tests are used to monitor CHF? I have congestive heart failure, since 2000. I would like to know what kind of test I need my doctor to run to tell me if I am improving as I am so tired all the time. Latest blood heart rate showed it was a very slow beat. I am 78 years old.

Probably the most important technique for monitoring a patient's status in CHF (congestive heart failure) is a visit with your doctor to discuss your exercise tolerance and to perform a physical exam. In addition, an ultrasound (echocardiogram) and an EKG are often useful adjunctive tools. In certain cases, blood tests (such as BNP and kidney function) and a chest X-ray can also be helpful.
However, CHF is a very diverse condition, and care must be individualized to the particular patient.
