As a rule, a prudent diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes (like stopping smoking) are the first line of defense in treating high cholesterol in patients without known cardiovascular disease. If that approach is unsuccessful in getting the cholesterol where it ought to be, and your physician thinks something else needs to be done to lower it, prescription medications are employed. They have been intensely studied, their side effect profile is usually well known, and, unlike various supplements like lecithin, their efficacy has been documented in scientific studies.
