Overview

Surgical Mentors
Join your colleagues from around the world to share clinical experiences and research advances in cardiovascular surgery, and to pay homage to surgical mentors at Texas Heart Institute. Faculty will address many of the evolving issues facing today’s cardiovascular specialists, particularly new modalities for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease. Also addressed will be the increasing urgency to attract more fine young surgeons to this specialty and to equip them fully for practice in the 21st century.

On behalf of the Cooley Society and Texas Heart Institute, we look forward to greeting you at Galveston’s Moody Gardens Hotel. If you have attended these symposia many times or if this is your first, know that you and your family are warmly welcomed. We structure meetings to promote quality scientific exchange, but also reserve time to renew valued friendships.

The Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society was organized and chartered on March 13, 1972 by Texas Heart Institute cardiovascular surgeons, residents and fellows as a tribute to their mentor for his contributions to cardiovascular surgery and to physician education throughout the world. Physician members now practice in 47 countries and 42 of the 50 United States.

Overview
As a pioneer in cardiovascular education and research, Texas Heart Institute is committed to providing the highest quality educational experiences to its trainees – the future leaders in cardiovascular surgery. Medical education literature suggests that there has been a decreased interest in surgical careers which has become a concern within the profession. A study published in The American Journal of Surgery has shown that emphasis on behaviors consonant with identified characteristics of a “teacher” may improve mentoring of students by surgeons and increase interest in surgical careers. There have also been substantial changes noted in the methods in which surgeons are currently being educated which directly impact practice expectations and patient care. These changes beg the question: “What are the hallmarks of surgical mentors that continue to nurture the surgeons of the future?”

These educational sessions aim to create higher quality and more valuable educational experiences for future trainees by summarizing the evolution of cardiovascular education, examining current educational trends of surgeons in training and exploring the role of mentors in surgical education.

The symposium will highlight the latest advances in the field of cardiovascular surgery, addressing priorities in education and innovations in clinical research as they relate to valvular heart disease, heart failure, congenital heart disease and aortic aneurysms.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, clinical researchers, and other allied health professionals who care for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the symposium, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the value of mentors in the education of surgeons
  • Acknowledge the honor and obligation of physicians to teach others
  • Identify best practices for treatment of primary cardiac sarcoma
  • Describe current techniques for mitral valvuloplasty and replacement
  • Review various options for treatment of the failing left ventricle
  • Compare endovascular and conventional repairs of aortic aneurysms

2009 International Recognition Award
George J. Reul, MD, FACS, FACC, FCCPThe Society is especially pleased to announce George J. Reul, MD as the fourteenth recipient of its International Recognition Award. This award is presented to an individual physician who has distinguished himself in the field of cardiovascular surgery or medicine. Since 1983, Dr. Reul has been Associate Surgeon-in-Chief at Texas Heart Institute, the only person ever to hold this position. He also serves as Medical Director for St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital’s Peripheral Vascular Laboratory which he instituted in 1981. Dr. Reul’s medical career includes service in Vietnam where, as Captain in the U. S. Army, he led a surgical team at the Ninety-Third and Twenty-Fourth Evacuation Hospitals. It was during this service that he worked in ballistics research and discovered his interest in vascular repair. His pursuit of cardiovascular surgery as a career has resulted in exceptional care for untold numbers of patients and excellent education for hundreds of young surgeons.

Dr. Reul is an exemplary educator. He currently holds academic appointments as Clinical Professor in the Departments of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, respectively. His dedication to teaching both new and established physicians extends over more than 20 countries where he has lectured and performed surgery. In 1985, he led a team of medical professionals from Texas Heart Institute to Beijing and Shanghai, which resulted in his being named honorary consulting professor of thoracic surgery at Shanghai Second Medical College. He is a recognized author, speaker and clinician whose skills as a physician extend far beyond the operating suite.  A highly respected leader, he is known for his compassion, fairness and equanimity.

The Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society is proud to honor one of its own, Dr. George J. Reul.
