Cooley Receives Honorary Fellowship in Edinburgh

Denton A. Cooley, MD

Denton A. Cooley, MD

HOUSTON (November 6, 2006) - In a formal ceremony at the 500-year-old Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh on November 3, Denton A. Cooley, M.D., was made an Honorary Fellow. Dr. Cooley is president and surgeon-in-chief of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. Honors from one’s peers and colleagues are especially satisfying, according to Dr. Cooley. He has received similar Honorary Fellowships from Royal Colleges of Surgery in Glasgow Scotland (1980), Ireland (1984), and England (1988). He also was honored by the Australasian College (1986) in Adelaide. In 2005, the American College of Surgeons created an Outstanding Surgical Patient Service Award for pioneering cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Cooley was the first recipient. Honorary Fellowships were awarded him by the International College of Surgeons in 1982 and the International College of Angiology in 1994. It is doubtful whether any American surgeon has received more honorary fellowships in colleges.
