The Honorable Robert A. Mosbacher, Sr.

The Honorable Robert A. Mosbacher, Sr., came home, so to speak. You see, Mr. Mosbacher began serving on the Texas Heart Institute (THI) Board of Trustees in 1969. He stepped down, as required, when he was named Secretary of Commerce by President George Bush in 1989. He has stayed in touch—through his membership on THI’s National Advisory Committee, his notable philanthropy and his participation in previous presentations of the Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award, including his uplifting introduction of the 2001 honoree, The Honorable James A. Baker III.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2008, there was a special homecoming. That evening, Mr. Mosbacher was welcomed as the 13th recipient of the Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award by none other than George Bush, the forty-first president of the United States.

The Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award, presented by Texas Heart Institute’s National Advisory Council, was established to recognize leadership and meritorious contributions to the advancement of society. Previous honorees are Dr. C. Everett Koop, former president George H.W. Bush, Walter Cronkite, Charlton Heston, Larry King, Betty Ford, Michel T. Halbouty, The Honorable James A. Baker III, Robert C. McNair, The Honorable Rudy Giuliani, Bob Newhart, and Tom Brokaw.

Mr. Mosbacher, who graduated from Washington and Lee University, is chairman and CEO of Mosbacher Energy Company in Houston. His numerous awards include the Aztec Eagle Award from then Mexico President Ernesto Zedillo. He was also past general chairman of the Republican National Committee, and he was point man for NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)

Mr. Mosbacher is married to Michele, and is the father of four and the grandfather of six. He has contributed to his community in numerous ways. In addition to his association with the Texas Heart Institute, he was twice past chairman of M. D. Anderson’s Cancer Institute’s Board of Visitors and a board member of the Naval Academy Endowment Trust Board and the American Hospital in Paris Foundation.

We wish to thank the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation and Margaret Alkek Williams for again agreeing to serve as lead underwriters. We also wish to acknowledge Texas Heart Institute trustees, John Duncan and Reed Morian, who co-chaired the event.
